Our One-on-One Adult Literacy Programs

Adult Basic Education (ABE)

Our Adult Basic Education (ABE) program helps adults learn and improve their reading, writing, and math skills. We work with you one-on-one to ensure you get the help you need.

What We Offer:

  • One-on-One Help: You will work with a tutor who will help you learn at your own pace. We make a special plan just for you.

  • Flexible Times: We know you are busy. We will find a time that works best for you to meet with your tutor.

  • Friendly Tutors: Our tutors are kind and know how to teach adults. They are here to help you do your best.

  • Safe and Happy Place: We want you to feel good about learning. Our program is a safe place where you can ask questions and learn new things.

  • Free: You don’t have to pay to join our program. We want everyone to have the chance to learn.

English as a Second Language (ESL)

Our English as a Second Language (ESL) program helps adults learn to speak, read, and write in English. We work with you one-on-one to make sure you get the help you need.

Yesmi, originally from Honduras, was in our Motheread Program and then came to the Literacy Council for citizenship and literacy tutoring.

Citizenship Tutoring

Our Citizenship Program provides a curriculum focusing on the civics and language skills necessary for students to pass the United States Customs and Immigration Services (USCIS) Naturalization Test and Interview.

Our students gain the knowledge needed for the Naturalization Exam and Interview while also working on their English reading and writing skills. We offer assistance throughout the entire process…from eligibility pre-screening to prep classes to ceremony day!

Johanna is from Costa Rica. She came to the CARE Group to sharpen up her English skills, and her added her goal of U.S. Citizenship!

Alene, who is originally from Nassau, Bahamas, became a student at The CARE Group in 2021 and began working with her tutor in our Citizenship Program. Alene has always dreamed of becoming a US Citizen and being able to exercise the rights and privileges granted to all US citizens.

Patricia is originally from the Bahamas. She became a student in the CARE Group's Citizenship program in 2021. Patricia worked hard for over 2 years preparing for the Interview Process and studying for the tests that are required to become a US citizen.
